Universiti Malaya is a 6 STAR university according to the 2020 SETARA rating. This is the highest degree of rating according to the assessment, reflecting the outstanding level of teaching, research, and services offered by the university.

The Rating System for Malaysian Higher Education Institutions (SETARA) is a standardized assessment system which rates the quality of teaching and learning of Malaysian universities and colleges. The rating is administered by the Ministry of Education (MOE) to ensure a continuous quality improvement of higher education in Malaysia.
